Vessel-to-grid (V2G) case study

Harnessing battery power stored in electric boats

This feasibility study will use boats powered by RAD 40 electric drives to investigate energy transfer between e-vessel batteries and the grid.

About the project

The innovative approach involves adapting chargers across marinas to optimise power usage, ensuring boats are always ready to use while contributing to grid resilience during peak periods.

Our partners

Supported by a cross-border consortium through an Innovate UK grant, including RS Electric, Aqua superPower, international partners in Canada and academic partners. This group seeks to establish V2G standards and drive commercial partnerships in both markets.

Evidence based

With installations planned in Plymouth in the UK and Halifax in Canada, the project aims to reduce carbon emissions, cut vessel operating costs for boat users and enhance grid flexibility.
