Pangolin Voyager: Silent Safari Powered by RAD
RAD Propulsion partnered with Pangolin Photo Safaris to deliver silent, solar-powered cruising for wildlife photography on Africa’s iconic Chobe River.
Pangolin Voyager: Electric Power for a Peaceful Safari
The Pangolin Voyager is a custom-built houseboat hotel designed for multi-day photographic safaris along the Chobe River. Built to provide a quiet, comfortable, and immersive experience, the vessel required a propulsion system that would compliment its eco-sensitive design and operational goals. RAD Propulsion was selected to provide the power behind the Voyager, equipping the boat with four of our RAD 40 electric outboard motors.
Minimal Disturbance, Maximum Experience
Wildlife viewing on the Chobe is all about silence, patience, and proximity - values that align perfectly with the RAD 40’s low-noise operation. Running combustion outboards in a remote location is problematic. The Chobe is a harsh and remote environment, breakdowns and servicing requirements on their outboards was high. Transporting and storing sufficient fuel and spare parts was expensive. The RAD 40 offers whisper-quiet propulsion, allowing the Voyager to approach with minimal disruption and giving photographers and guests an uninterrupted connection with the natural world.
Smooth Control, Effortless Navigation
The RAD 40’s fully integrated, fly-by-wire steering system enables smooth and precise handling — critical for the tight, slow-speed manoeuvres needed on a safari-style river journey. The intuitive control system allows the crew to easily guide the Voyager and position the vessel for the best possible views, without the noise or vibration of traditional propulsion systems.
Electric Efficiency
Onboard energy efficiency is vital when cruising at low speeds for extended periods. The RAD 40’s optimised electric drivetrain delivers quiet, reliable propulsion over long distances, all while consuming minimal energy. Designed with casual trawling in mind, the Voyager can glide gently along the river with minimal battery drain — maximising both range and relaxation.
Solar-Powered, Fully Self-Sufficient
The Pangolin Voyager is powered entirely by onboard solar panels, charging its twin RAD batteries and supplying clean, renewable energy for propulsion and onboard living. It’s a fully self-sufficient solution that eliminates the need for fuel supply chains and dramatically reduces environmental impact.
The RAD system also powers the Voyager’s new electric safari boat, which charges directly from the houseboat and provides quiet, low-vibration game viewing during golden hour — without the noise and emissions of traditional engines.
Sustainable Adventure, Powered by RAD
The Pangolin Voyager sets a new standard for low-impact river exploration, offering guests a truly tranquil, sustainable experience. We’re proud that RAD Propulsion’s clean, quiet, and intelligent outboard systems help make that possible.
