Senior mechanical design engineer

Location: Southampton, UK

Salary: Competitive

With our continued success and growth, RAD Propulsion is pleased to offer the opportunity for a dynamic and driven Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join our team, developing cutting-edge, smart, marine electric propulsion products. From concept to detail design and from prototyping, through testing to production, the engineer will be involved in every aspect of the product development, working closely with the chief technical officer, product designers and electrical engineers in a fast-paced design led environment.

The ideal candidate will have a good understanding of engineering principles supported by real-world experience of marine products and how consumers interact with them. They will have a methodical approach to problem solving and engineering challenges with high attention to detail, to meet both technical and business objectives.

In addition, the candidate will be someone who enjoys collaboration and helping others across the business, particularly when required to hit deadlines or deliveries.

Whilst not necessarily required for the role, some on-water experience on small boats would be considered advantageous as the role will involve taking part in sea-trials.

  • Ownership of entire products or elements thereof, throughout development and beyond, into production and support
  • Design of mechanical components and systems from conception to volume manufacture in accordance with applicable regulations and certification
  • Generation of production drawings, detailed and tolerance appropriately for manufacture, with revision control
  • Production and testing of prototypes, analysing data and feeding back into designs
  • Working with suppliers to identify cost-effective materials and manufacturing processes
  • Keeping accurate, costed bills of materials throughout the design process to help steer commercial decisions
  • Managing subcontractors and suppliers with respect to progress and quality of output
  • Writing professional engineering documents and technical notes for customers and product certification

Skills & Experience

  • A good understanding of engineering principles including loads, material properties, manufacturing methods, fluid dynamics and thermodynamics.
  • Proficient in 3D and 2D CAD modelling (Autodesk Fusion preferred)
  • Experience of simulation tools such as finite element analysis and computational fluid dynamics
  • Ability to demonstrate and visualise ideas and concepts through sketching and modelling
  • Knowledge of typical mechanical components including bearings, shafts, gears, seals, coatings etc
  • Knowledge and experience of modern manufacturing techniques and materials including additive manufacture, CNC machining, injection moulding and casting
  • Ability to manage own timeline and deliverables as well as those of others working in collaboration.
  • Hands-on experience of building and operating mechanical systems, preferably within the marine sector, understanding how they perform in harsh environments and have an appreciation for the aesthetics and ergonomics required for consumer products.
